Traditionally referred to as the Heptanese, so-called for the seven principle islands, the Ionian Islands actually include an additional handful of other smaller islands. These islands form the westernmost edge of Greece, and are widely spread apart. The main seven islands are Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Paxos and Kythira. The islands are well known for their beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, charming villages and stunning scenic countryside which is verdant and flourishing with greenery and nature. They have also recently become a hot-spot for windsurfers. Each Ionian island has a distinct character, and between them, they offer everything you could wish for from a Greek island holiday.

History
Once, the Ionian Islands were part of Central Greece but were torn apart when the terrain sank due to the seismic activity along the great coastline fault of the Ionian Sea. This accounts not only for the ragged shores and hauntingly beautiful beaches but it also accounts for the islands’ tall mountains, once part of the Pindos mountain range which crosses Central Greece. It also accounts for the great depth of the waters in the area which, at 4,406 meters, is the greatest in the Mediterranean.
The islands' name comes from the legend of Io, a mortal woman who Zeus lusted after. There are multiple accounts of the events that ensued, but the common threads are that Io swims across the body of water now known as the Ionian Sea, and she is at some point in the legend turned into a cow, which is rather unfortunate for her.
Legends aside, the islands form an interesting piece of Greek history. The Ionian Islands have been inhabited since Paleolithic times, have been through many invasions, and have received the influence of a variety of cultures. The Venetians, French and British have all in their own way shaped the architecture, culture, (excellent) cuisine – and the unique feel of Ionian life.
